A Market in Recovery Mode#
China's online home appliance market totaled CN¥ 508 billion in 2022 across the three leading Chinese online marketplaces covered by this analysis, a marked deceleration from the +18.5% YoY growth achieved in 2021. The +1.5% YoY growth reflects pandemic-induced disruptions: lockdowns restricted logistics operations, consumer confidence weakened, and the 2022 Double 11 promotional season broke its long run of year-on-year growth.
Demand was also unusually concentrated in time. Combined monthly sales in 2022 ranged from CN¥ 26.4 billion in the quietest month to CN¥ 80.0 billion in November, the promotional peak, with a secondary high point in June around the mid-year promotional window. That shape repeats in all three years of the series: November tops every year, June sits second, and the months between them carry a materially thinner run-rate.
With epidemic controls easing and domestic demand expansion policies taking effect, the market is expected to enter a slow recovery phase in 2023. China's Outline of the Strategic Plan for Expanding Domestic Demand (2022-2035) establishes key tasks directly relevant to the sector, including promoting green and low-carbon consumption and accelerating consumption quality improvement.[2]

Category Performance Diverges Sharply#
Smart appliances led growth at +5.3% YoY, supported by favorable government policies and rising consumer adoption of connected home devices, while large appliances trailed at just +1.1% despite commanding ~60% of the total market. The five major categories displayed markedly different growth trajectories in 2022, reflecting divergent demand drivers and maturity levels. Cleaning appliances, after two years of explosive growth exceeding +30% YoY, decelerated sharply to +1.4% as the category approached maturation.

Concentration Among the Largest Sellers Holds Steady#
Concentration at the top of the market stayed broadly stable across 2020-2022, but the largest sellers moved up the revenue ladder as a group. Taking the ten largest sellers by 2022 sales and following that same cohort back three years shows a clear upward drift: five of the ten sat below CN¥ 10 billion in 2020, four in 2021 and only one in 2022. By 2022 four of the cohort cleared CN¥ 20 billion and five clustered in the CN¥ 10-20 billion band. The story is a thickening middle tier rather than a widening gap at the very top.
The ten largest sellers moved up the revenue ladder between 2020 and 2022
Growth within that cohort was broadly positive. Nine of the ten grew year on year in 2022, and the spread was wide: four of the nine cleared +10%, while the remaining five landed in low- to mid-single digits. Against a market growing +1.5%, the group as a whole grew faster than the category average, and it did so without any single member running away with it.
The strongest profile in the group paired +25.2% revenue growth with a higher average selling price---a premium repositioning, with the year's gains coming through price and mix rather than through discounting. Read alongside the revenue ladder, the two charts describe the same thing from different angles: a cohort consolidating its middle, with growth distributed across the group rather than concentrated in one or two of its members.

Projectors Ride the Home Entertainment Wave#
Projector sales reached CN¥ 17.0 billion in 2022 with +12.7% YoY growth, benefiting from the pandemic-era shift toward home entertainment. The segment is scaling from the top down: four of the ten largest projector sellers cleared CN¥ 1 billion in 2022, against two in each of the two prior years, while the number sitting below CN¥ 500 million halved from eight in 2020 to four. One of the ten grew +39% in 2022 on optical hardware differentiation---evidence that the segment is still open to technology-led repositioning, and that scale at the top has not closed it to challengers.

Emerging Categories Signal Future Growth#
Several nascent product categories posted outsized growth in 2022, pointing to where the market is heading:
- Ceiling projectors grew +69% YoY to CN¥ 20.26 million---a small base, and one where demand clusters heavily in the November promotional window rather than spreading across the year
- Smart switches achieved CN¥ 230 million in sales with +52% YoY growth at an average price of CN¥ 89
- Floor-standing eye protection lamps reached CN¥ 410 million with +94% YoY growth, driven by parental concern for children's eye health
Ceiling projector sales in the November peak more than doubled in 2022
