Weight-Loss Injection Posts in China Rose Almost Eightfold

Jotham Lim By Jotham Lim 6 min read

Posts about weight-loss injections (减肥针, the everyday Chinese name for the injectable GLP-1 drugs) on Weibo, RED and Douyin rose from about 900 a month before China's June 2024 weight-management campaign to about 7,000 a month in the year to August 2026, according to Moojing Market Intelligence, while posts about diet recipes and intermittent fasting roughly halved in the latest year.

This article covers the fourth chapter of the full report, China Weight Management Industry Report 2023–2026, which uses social listening to measure how people in China talk about losing weight, what posts about the injections mention, and who writes them.

Key figures

  • About sixfold: the rise in posts about weight-loss injections on the year before, from about 15,000 to about 85,000
  • About 7%: the share of posts about the injections classified as negative, the highest among the keywords we measured
  • 74%: share of the people posting about the injections on Douyin who were aged 26 to 40
  • About half: the fall in posts about diet recipes and intermittent fasting on the year before

Method and scope: social listening on Weibo, RED and Douyin from Moojing Market Intelligence, posts mentioning each keyword, from January or September 2024, depending on the keyword, to August 2026. It counts the volume of conversation, not purchases or the number of people involved, and nothing in it measures the use of any drug.

How fast are posts about weight-loss injections growing in China?#

Posts using 减肥针, literally "weight-loss needle", rose about sixfold on the year before, from about 15,000 in the year to August 2025 to about 85,000 in the year to August 2026, according to Moojing Market Intelligence. Most of the rise came from November 2025 onwards, and the posts fell on one platform, from about 1,300 to about 600.

Posts about weight-loss injections multiplied while most diet keywords fell

Exhibit 9. Source: Moojing Market Intelligence, social listening across Weibo, RED and Douyin, posts mentioning each keyword, change from the year to August 2025 to the year to August 2026; posts in the latest year and the share classified as negative in brackets. A two-word keyword, such as 减肥 反弹, counts posts containing both words. Keywords that moved in different directions on different platforms include weight-loss injections, diet pills, losing weight, fat loss, the four pairs of weight loss with a concern and L-carnitine. The three drugs measured by name are shown in the full report.

Of the three drugs we measured by name, semaglutide was named most often, in about 82,000 posts in the latest year. Posts about diet pills (减肥药) fell 29%, though they rose slightly on one platform. The ordinary word for losing weight, 减肥, appeared in about 33.5 million posts, 18% fewer than the year before, though it rose slightly on one platform, and posts about diet recipes and intermittent fasting fell by about half. Posts naming white kidney bean (白芸豆) fell 42%, and those naming L-carnitine (左旋肉碱) 22%, though L-carnitine rose on one platform.

Against the months before the campaign the change is larger, because the base was small: from about 900 posts a month about the injections in January to May 2024 to about 7,000 a month in the latest year, or about 7.7 times as many. Over the same period posts using 减肥 fell by more than a third.

What do posts about weight-loss injections talk about?#

In a sample of 90 posts about the injections, 30 from each platform, just over a third (36%) give a weight figure, report weight lost or post a check-in (打卡). About a quarter each use words for a side effect, such as nausea (恶心) or hair loss (脱发) (28%), a clinic or doctor (28%) or diet (26%), according to Moojing Market Intelligence.

Posts about the injections mention weight figures, side effects and clinics more often than posts about losing weight

Exhibit 10. Source: Moojing Market Intelligence, social listening across Weibo, RED and Douyin, ten posts per keyword, platform and four-month window in the year to August 2026, 360 in all, coded by the words they contain. A post can carry several themes, and a theme is counted where the post's words contain any of a fixed list of terms for it. Each platform contributes the same number of posts whatever its share of the conversation, so the shares describe the sample, not all posts.

Another 17% of the sampled posts use words about whether a product is genuine or licensed, 12% mention a price or spending and 11% weight regain. Posts about losing weight in general rarely mention a weight-loss injection or drug (1%), and most often mention exercise (20%), weight figures (14%) and diet (11%). Posts about weight regain mention diets (59%) and exercise (44%) far more often than the injections or drugs (11%). The coding reads words, not intent.

Posts about the injections had the highest negative share among the keywords we measured, at about 7% in the year to August 2026. On Douyin the share was 19%, against 18% for diet pills and 8% for the ordinary word for losing weight, while diet keywords such as diet recipes and intermittent fasting were under 2% negative on every platform. Posts pairing weight loss with weight regain (反弹), anxiety, a plateau or side effects fell overall but grew on Douyin, by 18% to 33%, and their combined negative share stayed under 4%. Our sentiment analysis and social listening entries explain how posts are classified and counted.

Who posts about weight-loss injections in China?#

On Douyin, people aged 26 to 40 were 74% of those posting about the injections in the two years to August 2026, against 61% of those posting about losing weight and 63% of those posting about weight management, according to Moojing Market Intelligence. People aged 26 to 30 were more than twice as common among them as among Douyin's users overall.

On Douyin, people aged 26 to 40 are about three-quarters of those posting about weight-loss injections

Exhibit 11. Source: Moojing Market Intelligence, social listening on Douyin, share of posting users by age, September 2024 to August 2026; TGI is the index against all Douyin users, where 100 is average. Users under 16 are not reported for Douyin. A TGI of 200 means twice as common as among all Douyin users.

Among those posting about losing weight and weight management, people aged 26 to 40 are about 40% to 50% more common than among Douyin's users. The report's fourth recommendation is that brands read this conversation for the needs it reveals and keep the drugs out of their own marketing, since food may make no medical claim.

The policy and drug approvals behind the conversation are in China's Weight Management Year, the health-food claims in our article on the "weight loss" claim, and the four recommendations in four moves for brands. Every keyword, the theme lists and the method are in the full report.
